Local note
Maples drop late
Norway maple is the most common street tree in New York State (17.64% of street trees in a 2021 survey of 75 municipal inventories). Its seeds mature by late summer, and its leaves hold on longer in fall than native maples. A clean-out after the last leaves come down lasts through winter.
Questions people ask
What is gutter whitening (brightening)?
It's cleaning the outside faces of the gutters. Over time they collect black streaks that run down the face, often called tiger stripes, which a normal rinse doesn't remove. Whitening takes them off.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
At least once a year, after the leaves come down. Houses under big trees often need spring as well.
Do clean gutters help with ice dams?
Not on its own. Ice dams start with heat escaping into the attic and melting snow on the roof. Clean gutters let the water that does melt drain away.
