That green or black film on vinyl siding is usually algae or mildew. Iowa State's extension service says it grows in damp, shady spots with little air flow, especially on the north side of a house. Utica sees rain or snow on about 174 days a year (NOAA 1991–2020 normals), so those walls rarely dry out. We remove it with low pressure and a cleaning solution, the way the vinyl siding industry recommends, and rinse the house top to bottom.

Utica sees measurable rain or snow on about 174 days a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals for the Utica airport, provisional). Walls that get little sun stay damp longer, and that's where the green grows first.
Soft washing means cleaning siding with low pressure and a cleaning solution instead of blasting it, then rinsing. The vinyl siding industry warns against aiming a pressure washer upward, because it can force water behind the panels.
